Red Dead Redemption 2 Legendary Animals guide and maps

How to find all 16 Legendary Animals and what you can make from their pelts and parts

By Updated

There are 16 Legendary Animals scattered across the world in Red Dead Redemption 2. Tracking, hunting and skinning them is about more than just proving your hunting prowess, though. You'll get some fancy new duds and some valuable Trinkets once you take their remains to the Trapper and a Fence.

This guide will give you some tips on hunting the 16 Legendary Animals, show you their locations (or tell you which mission leads you to them), and then talk about what you can make from their parts.

Legendary Animal hunting tips

These 16 Legendary Animals are generally bigger and tougher than non-Legendary animals, so a little preparation will help. It's important to note, though, that both kill quality and the weapon you use do not matter for Legendary Animals. This means that you can use something overpowered with a good scope (and range) for everything.

There are a few other things you can do to make sure your hunt is successful:

  • Load up on Dead Eye tonics. Once you reach Dead Eye level 4, Dead Eye will highlight weak points — generally the head, heart and lungs — on animals, making it easier to take them down with fewer shots. We like Chewing Tobacco because you'll loot it constantly.
  • Keep track of the Trapper. A few of the Legendary Animals are in the massive size category, meaning their pelt takes up the entire trunk slot on your horse. That means you'll have to run to the Trapper to drop them off before you reach the next one. He's got his permanent stall in Saint Denis, but there are a few other spots he'll pop up around the countryside. (Look for the icon with a paw to find him.) Keep track of where he is so you don't end up wasting a lot of time riding in an unnecessary direction.
  • Lost parts automatically go to the Trapper. Any part of a Legendary Animal you can't pick up due to space limitations (go upgrade your satchels while you're out hunting) or lose will get sent to the Trapper automatically. We didn't test the limits of this, so we can't recommend you rely on it, but it's a nice safety net.
  • Use the Rolling Block Rifle. If you've completed the "Pouring Forth Oil" missions in Chapter 2, pick up the Rolling Block Rifle from a Gunsmith. It's a sniper rifle with plenty of oomph behind it, so it will take out the majority of the Legendary Animals with one shot.
  • Use special ammo. Since pelt quality doesn't matter, it makes sense to use whatever ammo packs the most punch. We like the Express Ammo.

How to hunt Legendary Animals

When you arrive in a Legendary Animal's location, you'll get an alert in the top left corner of your screen. From there, the process is similar to hunting anything else — and it might be a little easier, in fact.

Rockstar Games via Polygon

The first step is just finding them. You'll get a roadside-diner-placemat-map from Hosea when you complete "Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego" during Chapter 2, but it's far from detailed. It's enough to get you close, but you'll have a lot more luck if you use our maps below. Hosea's map is in your Satchel under the Documents tab, then look for Maps and choose the Legendary Animal Map.

Legendary Animal clues will be marked with a yellow cloud you can see in Eagle Eye and a question mark icon on your radar.
Rockstar Games via Polygon

Once you're in the right area, you'll get that alert on your HUD that reads:

You have entered Legendary Animal Territory. Hunt this Legendary Animal by finding and inspecting clues.

Trigger your Eagle Eye, and you'll hopefully see a yellow particle cloud highlighting a clue. You might also see a small white question mark on your radar and map. Inspect that clue, and you'll get a highlighted path to a second and then a third. After the third, the path will lead you directly to the Legendary Animal.

Generally, when you get the alert on your HUD, you'll be right over the spot where Arthur draws the animal on his map — but not always. If you think you're in the right place, but you can't see the clue, wander a little. The icons Arthur draws aren't always precisely placed, so you can't rely solely on that. Make some sweeping loops around the icon and keep an eye out for that question mark icon on your radar (and use our maps below).

We'll break them down by state — roughly the order in which you'll encounter them — below.

New Hanover Legendary Animals

There are two Legendary Animals in New Hanover. We'll include two maps below — one zoomed out and one zoomed in — for each to help you find them.

Legendary Beaver

You'll find the Legendary Beaver at a large beaver dam and lodge on the river just west of the Van Horn Trading Post and a little south of the Elysian Pool. (This is a great spot to hunt for beaver in general.)

Legendary Moose

The Legendary Moose is in the far northeast corner of the map on the western shore of Roanoke Valley (and just east of the Doverhill Nikolai Tesla Easter egg).

Ambarino Legendary Animals

There are five Legendary Animals in Ambarino. We'll include two maps below — one zoomed out and one zoomed in — for each to help you find them.

Legendary Bharati Grizzly Bear

This is the bear that you hunt with Hosea during "Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego" in Chapter 2. You don't have to kill it immediately after that mission and can return to this hunt later.

You'll find the Legendary Bharati Grizzly Bear to the northwest of O'Creagh's Run — it's a little southwest from the O in Ambarino on your map.

Legendary White Bison

The Legendary White Bison is along the northern shore of Lake Isabella in the far west of Ambarino a little west of the A on your map.

Legendary Bighorn Ram

The Legendary Bighorn Ram is across the Dakota River to the west of Valentine.

Legendary Wolf

The Legendary Wolf hangs out around the geyser near Cotorra Springs. You'll find it a little southwest of the Wapiti Indian Reservation (or the R in Ambarino on your map), a little west of Bacchus Station, and a little northwest of Fort Wallace.

Legendary Elk

The Legendary Elk is pretty close to the Legendary Wolf. You'll find it to the east of Fort Wallace and south of Bacchus Station.

West Elizabeth Legendary Animals

There is only one Legendary Animal in West Elizabeth. We'll include two maps below — one zoomed out and one zoomed in — to help you find it.

Legendary Buck

The Legendary Buck is in the far western edge of West Elizabeth, northwest of Strawberry an about halfway between Owanjila lake and the W in West Elizabeth.

Lemoyne Legendary Animals

There are five Legendary Animals in Lemoyne. We'll include two maps below — one zoomed out and one zoomed in — for each to help you find them. Two of them are gated, though, so we'll include those details in their sections.

Legendary Coyote

The Legendary Coyote is at the northern end of the Scarlett Meadows area of Lemoyne. It hangs out to the north-northeast of the second camp location and a little south of the L in Lemoyne on your map.

Legendary Fox

The Legendary Fox is in a small swampy area called Mattock Pond just north of Rhodes.

Legendary Boar

The Legendary Boar is on the northern edge of Bluewater Marsh about halfway between Saint Denis and the Van Horn Trading Post.

Legendary Bullgator

You won't be able to hunt the Legendary Bullgator until the "Country Pursuits" mission during Chapter 4. You'll find it northwest of Saint Denis in the swamps south of Lagras.

Legendary Giaguaro Panther

This panther won't appear until you have achieved the ninth rank of the Master Hunter Challenge, and it's easily the most difficult hunt on the list.

It's located southeast of Rhodes, directly east of Braithwaite Manor and south of Bolger Blade.

The maps above will show you where to go. When you get there, but before you start looking for clues, we strongly suggest making a manual save. The Legendary Giaguaro Panther will sneak up on you and likely kill you. When you return, you'll receive a message that says:

You have entered Legendary Animal Territory, but it will be some time before the animal returns to the area.

You can either wait it out in-game (and it could take days), or you can make a camp, sleep as long as you can, save manually, exit Red Dead Redemption 2 and reload. That worked for us.

We still had to hunt the Legendary Giaguaro Panther half a dozen times before we killed it. Here's how you can do it without making our mistakes:

  1. Follow the clues. Unlike the other Legendary Animals, the third and final clue won't point you directly at the Legendary Giaguaro Panther. Instead, you'll need to follow a path toward a tree.
  2. Take a Dead Eye stimulant, like chewing tobacco.
  3. Follow the path leading away from the third clue, holding your gun up with L2/LT. (We used a shotgun, which killed it with two trigger pulls.)
  4. As soon as you hear the panther (you'll almost certainly hear it before you see it), hit Square/X and press left or right on the left analog stick. This makes you dive. This allows you to avoid its pounce.
  5. Click the analog stick to invoke Dead Eye.
  6. While you're in Dead Eye, look for a small red circle radar on your radar. That's the panther.
  7. Turn toward the small red dot.
  8. Shoot the panther as it runs away. (Don't worry about locking on. Just shoot it.)

And here's what that looks like:

Legendary Animal Garments Sets

Once you have hunted some Legendary Animals and turned in their pelts to the Trapper, you'll be able to make yourself eight fancy new outfits. These aren't the only outfits that the Trapper can make you, but we're going to focus on the ones that require Legendary Animal pelts.

Legendary Animal Trinkets and Talismans

Other than pelts, you'll pick up other bits and pieces from the Legendary Animals you hunt and kill. These can be turned into valuable Trinkets and Talismans at a Fence.

Rockstar Games via Polygon

The Trinkets can be crafted with just the Legendary Animal parts:

  • Beaver Tooth Trinket — Legendary Beaver Tooth. Slows weapon degradation by 10 percent.
  • Buck Antler Trinket — Legendary Buck Antler. Receive higher quality skinned animal parts (more on this one below).
  • Moose Antler Trinket — Legendary Moose Antler. Increases health XP gained by 10 percent.
  • Cougar Fang Trinket — Legendary Cougar Fang. Increases stamina XP gained by 10 percent.
  • Coyote Fang Trinket — Legendary Coyote Fang. Increases Dead Eye XP gained by 10 percent.
  • Elk Antler Trinket — Legendary Elk Antler. Increases money looted by 10 percent.
  • Fox Claw Trinket — Legendary Fox Claw. Adds five seconds to Dead Eye.
  • Panther's Eye Trinket — Legendary Panther Eye. Decrease Dead Eye drain by 10 percent for the first three seconds.
  • Pronghorn Horn Trinket — Legendary Pronghorn Horn. Stops animals on horse from spoiling.
  • Ram Horn Trinket — Legendary Ram Horn. Doubles the amount of thyme, oregano and mint you collect.
  • Wolf Heart Trinket — Legendary Wold Heart. Doubles the amount of alcohol you can drink before you feel the effects.
  • Tatanka Bison Horn Trinket — Legendary Tatanka Bison Horn. Decrease all melee damage received by 10 percent.

The Talismans will need a few extra pieces to craft:

  • Alligator Tooth Talisman — Legendary Alligator Tooth. Decrease Dead Eye core drain rate by 10 percent. (You'll also need the Vintage Civil War Handcuffs that you get for sending in your first Cigarette Card set and a Gold Jointed Bracelet.)
  • Bear Claw Talisman — Legendary Bear Claw. Decrease health core drain rate by 10 percent. (You'll also need the Quartz Chunk you get when you send in your first Dinosaur Bone coordinates and a Silver Chain Bracelet.)
  • Bison Horn Talisman — Legendary Bison Horn. Decreases stamina core drain rate by 10 percent. (You'll also need the Abalone Shell Fragment you can find in a chest in Rhodes and a Silver Earring.
  • Boar Tusk Talisman — Legendary Boar Tusk. Decrease horse health and stamina core drain rates by 10 percent. (You'll also need the Cobalt Petrified Wood that you can find in a hidden chest near Lake Isabella and a Gold Earring.)

The Buck Antler Trinket

The description of the Buck Antler Trinket just says that the "player receives higher quality skinned animal parts." While that's exciting when you're looking for Perfect Pelts, it's also really vague.

The Buck Antler Trinket isn't magic. You'll still never get a Perfect quality pelt from a two-star animal and you won't get a perfect pelt from a squirrel you kill with dynamite. You still have to go through a lot of the same steps you normally do when seeking Perfect Pelts.

What the Buck Antler Trinket does is gives you a little leeway when you kill a three-star animal. For example, if you kill a three-star deer with a less-than-perfect hit — say through the stomach instead of the head — it'd normally result in a Good (two-star) Pelt. The Buck Antler Trinket means that you'll still pull a Perfect Pelt off of that deer.

New Austin Legendary Animals

There are three Legendary Animals in Ambarino. We'll include two maps below — one zoomed out and one zoomed in — for each to help you find them.

Legendary Tatanka Bison

The Legendary Tatanka Bison is located southwest of Blackwater. Head in that direction for Thieves Landing. Head west from there to Stillwater Creek. Head south from there to find your prey.

Legendary Pronghorn

The Legendary Pronghorn is located southwest of Blackwater. Look for an area marked as Rio Del Lobo Rock on your map. Your prey is to the west of that, betted it and Fort Mercer.

Legendary Cougar

The Legendary Cougar is located at the far western edge of the map. Head west by southwest from Blackwater, really until you can't go any farther. When you find the city of Tumbleweed, head directly west from there to discover your prey.
